What sounds should be used in horror?
In horror films, the sound makes up a good proportion of the film and is the main influence in bringing a dark and frightening atmosphere to the film. There are certain sound effects that are extremely effective in getting the audience feeling tense and scared whilst watching horror films.
Low pitched/bass frequencies are good sound effects because it indicates that there is something big that is going to happen and that it will be quite dangerous.
High pitched frequencies such as strings are good sound effects to use in horror films. This is because the brain automatically links high pitched frequencies with happy situations but when brought into horror films it makes the audience feel tense and uncomfortable.
