The Ring (2002)
At the start of the scene there is a close up shot of a woman peering over the door at the tv where there is just static. All you can hear is static and then she goes and turns the tv off and then when she walks back it turns itself back on and static is then heard again, this is to create tension and that something is turning it back on. Further on into the opening scene you hear like a gust of wind and when she turns around the window is open this makes us the audience feel scared and think that something is lurking and then the fridge door opens with no explanation this makes us now feel that something is in the house possibly a ghost. When she goes upstairs there is water this is effective because it makes us wonder where the water is coming from. All you can see underneath the door is a flashing light, quite possibly light from a tv. - CG
The Conjuring
The opening scene of 'The conjuring' starts with kids running into their new house, the use of children again make us the audience think that children are innocent, the children are playing hide and seek with their mum. The use of silence creates tension and make us the audience think that something is going to happen when she goes to the closet but in fact nothing happens which lowers and raises our expectations. Further on into the trailer when the kids are tucked into bed, the mother hears a smash of the pictures downstairs and heads down into the basement. This makes us the audience know that something bad is going to happen and that in horror films going down into the basement can be related to going to hell and hell is where bad things happen. We then see that she gets locked in to the basement and there is total blackness, This creates fear and tension to the audience because we do not know what is happening in the darkness. She then lights a match which means that they are going back to when the did not have technology. -CG
Child's Play 3
The opening title sequence of 'Child's Play 3' is set in an abandoned factory that was used to make the Good Guy dolls in the prequel to 'Child's Play 3'. This is an effective opening title sequence because it is set in a scene that sets the tone for the rest of the film. The scene is filmed in a dark lighting , therefore representing a typical horror film. Accompanied by the setting the music also helps to introduce the film as a horror film because it is an eerie type of music which gradually intensifies throughout the opening title sequence. During the scene, there was an extreme close up shot of a half-melted doll (chucky) getting grabbed and it started to bleed as if it was an actual human body. This makes the audience immediately interested in the film because it is creepy to think that a doll is actually alive and therefore wants to carry on watching the film. Another thing that contributes to this scene to make it effective is the colour scheme that was picked after the blood had been mixed with the wax. This then created a colour scheme of black and red which represents horror extremely well. For example the colour of red can be associated with danger, death and blood and the colour of black can be associated with evil and darkness.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
The opening title sequence of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' is set in the nightmare of a girl named Nancy. This is an effective opening title sequence for many different reasons. Firstly, it's effective because they use creepy background music which represents the fact that it is a horror film because it's a slow pace but at times gets dramatic and intense. during the scene, there is a close up shot of Freddy Krueger's hand when he is wearing the blades on his fingers that really makes the audience interested and it informs them that it is going to be a slasher type horror film and potentially gets them interested in the rest of the film. The lighting is also key for setting the tone for the rest of the film. It uses dark lighting in order to do this as it creates a scary atmosphere.
